Lifetime Achievements1) Voted leader of a free republic by the people of France in 1800
2) Kept France in order and stability by stabilizing the economy and having more equality in taxation 3) Set up lycées, or government-run public school to provide trained officials 4) Napoleonic code was greatest work - comprehensive system of laws that gave the country a uniform set of laws, eliminated injustices, limited liberty, and promoted order and authority over individual rights 5) Was crowned emperor on December 2nd in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris 6) By the early 1800s, I had controlled all of Europe except Britain, the Ottoman Empire, Portugal, and Sweden through imperialism. |
Lifetime setbacks1) Decreed a blockade to prevent all trade and communication between Britain and every other European country, called the continental system, weakened the economies of France and other lands I controlled
2) Invaded Portugal because they were not following the Continental System. I deposed the Spanish king and put my brother, Joseph, to the throne. Spain became outraged and formed guerrillas, or groups of spanish peasant fighters. Britain and guerrillas joined together to start war with Napoleon, called Peninsular war. I lost about 300,000 valuable men. 3) Invaded Russia because of a breakdown in our alliance. The Russians used the scorched-earth policy, the burning down of grain fields and slaughtering of livestock to leave nothing to eat, to weaken us and we proceeded eastward. Much of my army starved and died, leaving me only 10,000 soldiers. 4) Exiled twice, first time in Elba and the second in St. Helena. |
